  65. CheckSum System and Accounts
  66.  
  67. Setting up a new system of accounts in CheckSum is a simple, menu-driven
  68. process.  CheckSum was designed to address the everyday personal and small
  69. business accounting needs of non-accountants.  You don't have to be an 
  70. expert to use CheckSum.  We have integrated basic accounting concepts into
  71. the application while making the process of keeping track of your finances 
  72. more intuitive to the layperson.  CheckSum's powerful special features 
  73. automate the double-entry bookkeeping and eliminate some other cumbersome
  74. procedures in traditional accounting.  However, it's important that you understand some basic concepts of accounting and how they are implemented
  75. in CheckSum before you begin.

  77.      In CheckSum, a System is a discreet set of interrelated accounts.  
  78. You can think of it as a structure that encompasses all your financial 
  79. relationships under one roof. When you create more than one system, the
  80. accounts in one system are kept completely separate from those in the 
  81. other system.  For example, if you kept your parents' books, their bank
  82. accounts and credit card accounts could be organized in a unique package, 
  83. or system, so as not to get confused with your own accounts.

  85.      Accounts in CheckSum are more flexible than accounts in traditional 
  86. accounting methods. You may set up assets, cash, or liability accounts 
  87. that mimic concepts in a chart of accounts. But, CheckSum also allows you
  88. to track your obligations to particular entities in a format that reflects 
  89. an everyday understanding of record keeping.  You can track your checking
  90. account transactions in one account, regardless of who you write checks to.
  91. You can track your credit card in one account in a way that reflects the
  92. statement you receive from your credit card company.

  94.   Categories are codes used to identify a transaction's purpose and to 
  95. group transactions together in order to develop meaningful figures and 
  96. reports. Using the category feature wisely will allow you to extract
  97. sophisticated summary information from your accounts.  Expenses will be 
  98. easily organized for tax preparation or budget plans. The categories feature
  99. is one of the powerful tools CheckSum uses to track complicated personal financial information.

  105. equipment, etc.) and the ability to consolidate them into a complete 
  106. financial picture, either as a Balance Sheet or a period sensitive Income

  108. layers of categories through which one can analyze expenditures for tax or
  109. budgeting purposes.
